Trauma Management program

This is our flagship program that was born out of the need to provide emotional support to women in prison. This critical need was realized when Lucy Karambu (the Founding Director of Resilient Woman)┬ámade a couple of visits to Lang’ata women’s prison including attending numerous sections of the Discharge Boards at the said correctional facility. At the initial stage, Ms. Karambu thought that business management skills was what women needed. Later, she discovered that, the giving of money to people that are ‘stuck and bound’ in an environment rattled with negative emotions exacerbated by traumatic experiences will do little to change their perceptions on life and that of themselves. In such environments, as it was realized, incarcerated women are unable to make independent decisions about their lives as well as utilizing business training and opportunities to manage start-ups on their own. Information gathered from inmates on these visits, including those gathered from discussions during discharge boards and conversations with key persons at the correctional facility,┬áMs. Karambu learned that the critical need for incarcerated women as they transition from prison, was to equip them with trauma management skills to deal with the emotional baggage acquired during their time of imprisonment. The Trauma Management Program offered by Resilient Woman is intended to reduce the level of traumatization, promote emotional healing, and to facilitate a smooth transition towards the re-integration process. In this way, these women would be empowered and be able to take charge of their lives.

The trauma management is a 3-day training in a safe environment where women speak from the hearts and are listened to with respect, without being judged.
